Question How to upgrade Captivate to 2.2 Froyo

My Captivate came with 2.2 Froyo preinstalled. However, my girlfriend's mom's came with 2.1 preinstalled. I'm going to follow this guide to use Kies Mini to upgrade her phone.

I'll back everything up to my laptop first so she won't lose her pictures or her books... but what about her apps? If something goes wrong and I have to restore her phone back to factory defaults, will she lose the apps? Should I root the phone and install Titanium Backup to backup her apps? I have never used Titanium Backup before so I'm not sure how that works exactly. Does it backup the apps to a folder on the SD card? Or does it back the apps up to a remote location?

    Default

Titanium backs up the apps to the SD card and then you have an option to sync those files to Dropbox.

Titanium does require the phone to be Rooted however. But it will save EVERYTHING, like game saves, not just the app like another program (say App Monster, or Astro File Manager) would.

It is a good idea to back up, but not a requirement.
