    Spirit

    GENERAL INFO:

Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad running iOS 3.1.2 through 3.2. It was developed by an 11-year-old Wii homebrew developer named Quinn V. Spirit allows users to install software not approved by Apple on their iDevices. It is available for the Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms. It continues the extremely straightforward tradition of the jailbreaking program blackra1n's user interface, which offers only a single function to jailbreak the iDevice. For Linux, the user executes a simple command after compiling, such as /home/user/spirit.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spirit is a userland jailbreak, originally available right after the iPad 3G launch on May 1, 2010. Because userland jailbreaks exploit holes in iOS (Not the Bootrom, iBoot, iBSS etc) they affect users who are both jailbroken and not jailbroken (potentially compromising the security of users who have not jailbroken), Apple patched the exploit in the 4.0 iOS firmware.

On May 21, 2010, Chronic Dev Team member p0sixninja announced via Twitter that he had ported the Spirit jailbreak to Linux Operating Systems. This version requires some assembly. This version contains all of the files uploaded to the device in a non-compiled way.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Compatibility

Spirit works on all Apple devices running iOS 3.1.2 to 3.2, iOS 4 patched the exploit required for it to run. It is untethered (you do not have to run the jailbreaking program when you reboot) and installs Cydia by default.

For users running an official version of iOS, the hack does not delete any data on the device being jailbroken. The first version of Spirit did however delete photos on the device, but has since been updated to prevent the deletion of photos.

iPad 3G, iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3GS users have been recommended to back up their SHSH blobs in case something goes wrong during the jailbreak.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ISSUES
Because most Cydia applications are designed to be used only on an iPhone or iPod touch, some users have reported crashing or bricking of their iPads after installing incompatible software or code. This has, in most cases, been fixed by restoring the iPad in iTunes and re-jailbreaking. So far, no iPhone or iPod touch users have reported problems.

Some Windows 7 users have reported getting error 'c0000005' while attempting to run spirit.exe. This has apparently been fixed in the May 3rd, 2010 update. Users still experiencing this problem can get around this by running spirit.exe in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode.

Users with a tethered jailbreak have to restore with iTunes before they can jailbreak using Spirit. Users who have previously jailbroken their devices using Spirit also have to restore with iTunes before upgrading to most new tethered jailbreaks.

    Blackra1n/Blacksn0w

    GENERAL INFO:

Blackra1n is a program that jailbreaks version 3.1.2 of Apple's operating system for iDevices.

The program uses a bug in the USB code of the firmware for iDevices, allowing unsigned code to be executed.[1] Blackra1n uses this exploit to patch the firmware of the iDevice whilst in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode. The program allows users to install Cydia

Blackra1n RC3 Includes Blacksn0w (Unlock for any sim carrier use)
    Hacktivates iPhone's

    Blacksn0w

Geohot's runtime unlock for baseband 5.11.07 (used by the iPhone 3G & 3GS). blacksn0w exploits the AT+XEMN Heap Overflow, and can be installed via blackra1n or its Cydia repo (http://blackra1n.com/).

blacksn0w can be installed by adding http://blackra1n.com/ as a Cydia repository.

If the iPhone was jailbroken with blackra1n, the blackra1n app can install blacksn0w. Run the blackra1n app on the SpringBoard, and tap ra1n to update the app. Load blackra1n.app again and choose the 'sn0w' option to install. Commcenter will restart and you will have an unlocked iPhone 3G(S).

    Dev-Team

    GENERAL INFO:

The iPhone Dev Team is a development group in the 'iOS' (previously iPhone OS) community which has developed a number of tools to enable use of applications not authorized by Apple Inc on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and to enable use of the iPhone on GSM carriers not contracted by Apple. These applications provide owners with the ability to sidestep the limitations placed on the devices by the manufacturer, allowing for activities such as deep customization and easy international roaming. The group and their tools have become emblematic for these activities, which are termed jailbreak and SIM unlocking respectively, to the extent that the Electronic Frontier Foundation have made them the primary example used in their petition to create a DMCA anti-circumvention exemption for jailbreaking and Apple executive Greg Joswiak (Vice President iPhone Product Marketing) has quoted them in his countering comment to the same petition.

The Dev Team's tools have been used on at least 1.6 million devices worldwide.

    Controversy

The Dev Team's latest release, ultrasn0w 1.2, uses the same AT+XAPP command exploit found in the 05.13.04 baseband by updating the iPhone's baseband to version 6.15.00 (found in the iPad 3G). This change cannot be undone.

Despite claims of scrupulous testing, this baseband update has caused a variety of issues on both 3G and 3GS devices since its release including nonfunctional wifi connectivity and deactivated GPS functionality. The Dev Team have yet to address any of these issues.

    Geohot

George Francis Hotz (born October 2, 1989), alias geohot, million75 or simply mil is known for working with other people to unlock the iPhone, allowing the phone to be used with other wireless carriers, contrary to AT&T and Apple's intent. He is also noted for jailbreaking the iPhone OS and developing a method for cracking the PlayStation 3, causing Sony to remove the "OtherOS" feature from existing models in response. On July 13, 2010, Hotz posted a message on his Twitter account stating that he was giving up trying to crack the PS3 any further.

According to Hotz's blog, he traded his unlocked 8GB iPhone to Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell, for a Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. Hotz said he wanted to give the iPhones to the other members of the team who created the hack with him. Hotz's hardware based unlocking technique has largely been replaced by software unlocking that does not require dis-assembly of the iPhone.

On February 8, 2008, Hotz developed the software unlock for the iPhone's new Bootloader Version 4.6 that was previously only achievable with a "testpoint based hardware unlock".

On July 3, 2009, Hotz announced purplera1n, the first public software exploit for jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS. Details were posted on his blog.

On October 11, 2009, at 3:33AM Hotz released blackra1n, a jailbreak for all iPhones and iPod Touches. The only caveat was that the iPod touch third generation would need a "tethered jailbreak" to work.

On October 25, 2009, Hotz released Blackra1n RC2, an update to his previous blackra1n utility. This version allows MC Model iPod Touch 2G (8GB iPod Touch third generation) and new-bootrom iPhone 3GS users to jailbreak their iPod touches as well. (tethered jailbreak only)

On October 31, 2009, Hotz announced the impending release of Blackra1n RC3, this version will include blacksn0w which will allow SIM unlock of all iPhones using Blacksn0w RC1. Blacksn0w was originally scheduled for release on November 4, 2009, but due to positive test results it was moved to the 3rd. Blacksn0w was the #1 trending topic on Twitter as requested by GeoHot only moments after its release.

On April 13, 2010, Hotz established a website for his newest jailbreak software limera1n. Limera1n was rumored to be his newest jailbreaking tool.

On June 24, 2010, Hotz wrote on Twitter that he had no plans to release a new jailbreak. He has told people looking for a jailbreak release to 'keep an eye on Spirit, the currently used program for 3.1.x jailbreaking, which lead to the belief there are plans to update the software to allow iOS 4.0 jailbreaking. This however has not had a release date confirmed.

On July 10, 2010, Hotz published that he had been able to jailbreak an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0. As evidence, he provided a picture of the device executing Cydia. This post has since been edited and blocked from public view, in which Hotz stated that the picture was "quite obviously fake", addressing himself to "the haters".

On July 13, 2010, Hotz announced his retirement from iDevices hacking, saying that it's not fun as it used to be, and people were taking too serious something he used to do just as a distraction.[14]

On October 8, 2010, Hotz confirmed he was releasing a Jailbreak on 10/11/10; one day after the release of GreenPois0n. He also posted a picture of limera1n running on an iPhone 3G S, iPod Touch fourth generation, iPhone 4 and on the iPad.

On October 9, 2010, Hotz released limera1n Beta 1 - without support for the 3GS (due to a problem with the bootrom). Additionally, the exploit has been found to be moderately buggy, even on supported devices. This suspended the release of the SHAtter exploit in the form of greenpois0n, due for release the next day. On the limera1n website, he claims this was to make the Chronic Dev team "do the right thing" - presumably implying that they should save their jailbreak exploit for fifth generation devices. He later went on to release three more betas, containing support for iPhone 3GS models, along with various bug fixes and other stability enhancements.

On October 11, 2010, Hotz released what appears to be the final version of his jailbreak (RC1b). Hotz also sarcastically put on his website that the Mac version of this jailbreak is "coming in 7 years".
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Other accomplishments and recognition

Hotz was a finalist at the 2005 ISEF competition, with his project "The Googler". Continuing with robots, Hotz competed in his school's highly successful Titanium Knights battlebots team. George also worked on his project, "Neuropilot," in which he was able to read EEG signals off his head with hardware from the OpenEEG project.

Hotz competed in the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a science competition for high school students, where his project, entitled "I want a Holodeck", received awards and prizes in several categories. Hotz has received considerable attention in mainstream media, including interviews on the Today Show, Fox, CNN, NBC, CBS, G4, ABC, CNBC, and articles in several magazines, newspapers, and websites, including Forbes, and BBC.

The Forbes article said Hotz hopes to go into neuroscience: "hacking the brain," he called it. In March 2008, PC World magazine listed George as one of the top 10 Overachievers under 21.

In December 2007, Hotz travelled to Sweden to attend the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar and talk about his 3D imaging invention (called Project Holodeck) that netted him a $20,000 Intel prize earlier that year.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Personal life

Hotz grew up in Glen Rock, New Jersey, where he attended the Bergen County Academies, a magnet public high school. He has one sister, Julia Hotz, alias "Fifty". His father is also George Hotz, a computer teacher at Immaculate Heart Academy

    Cydia / Jay Freeman (Saurik)

    Jay Freeman Twitter

    Jay Freeman Official Website

    A quick look at cydia

If you want to know why Cydia was given the name 'Cydia' look here. Cydia is the main reason that everyone jailbreaks their idevice, this give's them option's to 'Tweak' the layout and usage of app's throughout the entire phone. You can also change the FONT , add a theme or mix two or more theme's together to give your device that unique look. (or to show off to your friend's). If you are not the normal jailbreaker, then you have either created a theme, created an app or game, or you have some tweak's ect......And they all get hosted through cydia.
Cydia was created by Jay 'Godfather of jailbreaking' Freeman AKA Saurik.

    Jailbreak

What is jailbreaking?? Glad you asked! Jailbreaking is exploiting a hole in apple's software that allow's for unsigned code to be used on your idevice. Or to put it another way "releasing the device from apple's little jail cell, which very much restrict's what you can and cannot do to your device".
Usually, only app's and source's allowed on the phone are one's that are obtained through the appstore. But jailbreaking allow's third party app's and unsigned code.....So mod and tweak your device as you wish.

Jailbreak's can be out within a week after a new firmware has been released, or maybe even not at all if the firmware release was only to patch the existing jailbreak hole!
