Ok im so bored at work..
I usually have some time to do stuff but I don't have much to do.
I started work on an RPG, which works decently. Loads maps in under a second, has 5 cool maps, and the character looks in the direction you move him. But that's not the point.

Was wondering if anyone wanted to work on some type of RPG, or anything really..

If you do, it's preferred that you:
    --------------------------------------
    - Have some way to communicate fast (IRC, IM, etc)
    - Know Lua to a decent degree.
    - Have some sort of skill in photoshop.

Im still up for working on the zen garden, so don't think im trying to replace that or anything.

Lol, go to the important Lua links sticky..
Just read the luaplayer tutorial, and review the manual, and then..
    practice! lol
They added a new tut, showing an example of how to tile a map. I liked the idea over what I did in my RPG because my maps are all static, but with this you can inter-change tiles at will.

I was thinking about making every tile 20 x 20. Although im not sure of the best size to use, any ideas?

Edit: Do you guys want to do the typical 2d, image on tiled background, or want to try and do something 3d-esque (like diablo 2, a 2D game trying to look 3D) ?

Edit 2: Check out these cool ass crono trigger sprites http://www.videogamesprites.net/ChronoTrigger/Party/

lets make it look lile a pokemon game....lol jk.....

1)if we did a 3d(2d look) it would take alot longer to do the art....

2)If we did just a 2d over the head shot(kinda like pokemon) the art would be more simple and easyier to create...

personaly i think we sould go with #2 because i think it will give a more RPG like feel more than a diablo 2 type would.....(dident realy like that game....)

but 3d(in 2d) would be way to hard to do....

PS: i like those sprites that you posted the link too.....we should do something like that....definatly....lol

    Pokemon look would work.
Just like a 45* angle shot.

w2ell, it could look like pokemon games, but the people have to be bigger. the pokemon guys are like 8 pixels tall... and look crapy.

I think we should make it 2D and the tiles should be a size that will add up to the screen size, so the best size is 24 X 24 pixels, but then there are4 8 leftover pixels along the top or bottom. I was thinking, we could make a menu on the bottom for the character helath and status and all that. and it stays there and changes for attacks during battles. Here's a little example i made quickly:

Thats not a bad idea, although it forces the 2d concept.
Im getting pretty decent at making tiles in photoshop though.

The menu shouldn't be too hard to do. Biggest thing is finding a better way to check to see if they are exiting the map. That, and 'blocked' tiles, that you cannot go through.

yea i am not sure how you would make no enterance blocks......i learned it in VB.....but no clue with lua...

for the game will the tile shift like in pokemon(everystep you take the screen moves in that direction...

or will it be when you leave the screen will the next tile page load alltogeather..?

I was working on where you move and it moves the whole screen today. I got stuck trying to load a map bigger than the game screen =/
