It just seems that they are just so simular but with a different casing, can anyone confirm this?

As you can see, they both have this in common:

-The disk is the same size

    -They both have outer casing

-The metal middle part is the same

-They both have a hole in the case so that the disk can be read from that section

Sorry if this has been brought up before, was just looking at a UMD and a MD Disk popped into my head, lol.

If your answer is "yes", then that's all you need to know. Hit that shit. If your answer is "no", then leave it be.

That's incorrect. CDs, mini CDs, mini disks, UMDs, and DVDs are all different.
For one a mini CD is something like 300MB (don't remember exactly).
A mini dvd is what the gamecube uses, which is 1.5GB.

Anyhow, back to the original poster. Mini disks and UMDs are similar. Which is no surprise, since Sony did both of them. But the mini disk is about 1GB while UMDs are 1.8GB. So, yeah.

I wish people stopped asking these questions and did their research instead of assuming one format is the same as the other but smaller.

UMDs actually, are slightly smaller than the Mini-CD and Mini-DVD formats. I believe a normal Mini is 80cm, but UMD is 60cm. Mini-Dvd = 1.5GB approx. However UMD's density is slightly higher than DVD, allowing it to hold 1.8GB approx on a smaller surface area. There is no information on he UMD drive having any support for reading discs using a bigger wave length (smaller density) so you cannot burn media for it.

Considering Sony made both formats, you shouldn't be surprised by their similar appearance.
