I've been kind of out of the loop recently in regards to new hacks and stuff. I had my emulators and Devhook, so I was happy. But now there's this custom firmware sort of thing for 2.71 that I keep hearing about. Are there any serious advantages that it has over a 1.50 that I can't have by just emulating a later firmware?

    My understanding of SE-C:
    1. It has Recovery Mode
    2. Can load homebrew applications
    3. Natively supports newer games than 1.50 (Obviously)
    4. Can run ISOs from the PSP's menu screen
    5. It has Devhook

    My understanding of 1.50:
    1. Can have Recovery Mode (With a firmware patch)
    2. Can load homebrew applications
    3. Can load ISOs through a loader
    4. It has Devhook

I admit that I probably missed something huge, but that's why I'm asking. Aside from natively running newer games, and running ISOs from the XMB (Which, I admit, I don't care about. I don't use ISOs enough for it to matter), does SE-C have any useful features that a 1.50 with Devhook doesn't? And in regard to the recovery mode... if I brick, can I use any firmware upgrade I want to recover my PSP, or do I have to use 2.71 again (In case it doesn't allow a lower 'upgrade', like the stock firmware)?

Sorry if this is a n00bish question. I put it in general as the help forum comes across to me as where I go to ask for help installing SE-C, and that's not really what I'm doing. I also did a few searches, and I couldn't find any sort of a comparison of SE-C and 1.50... if there is one somewhere that I missed, feel free to link me there if it's easier than typing out an explanation.

Then you really didn't search hard
There are hundreds of debates on this.

If you like 1.50, then 2.71 SE is a 1.50 on steroids.

I did some digging and found this for SE-A. So this is outdated, but I want to find the other one...

2.71 loads ISOs much faster than 1.50.

I loaded street fighter 4x faster than my friend, who had normal 1.50

1.50 generally hides the corrupt file icon better than 2.71 (I get a lot of corrupt icons now)

2.71 SE-C also seems to run 1.0 homebrew better than 1.50. Most of the 1.50 homebrew i have doesn't even work on my 2.71, forcing me to change the eboots

but all in all I would recommend 2.71 SE-C, since it has the Recovery mode built in(which covers any noob's ass pretty well) and generally works with ISOs better than 1.50., and is generally more convienent

Also, all the little features that 2.71 has like custom background without flashing, and because its not emulating on top of Devhook, everything you do is a whole lot faster!

Scribble = Idk, if someone randomly punched in the STOMACH it wouldn't really hurt, especially if it was a girl. I think though, it's because I have lots of stomach muscle and that my stomach would automatically flex.

okay. so upgrading to a custom 2.71 (lets say the C version) would be much better than having 1.5?s

    ^^Yup.
There's only a few disadvantages I can think of, for SE-C:
    1) Less space on the flash, means that flash customisation is slightly more restricted
    2) 2.71 SE-C is generally slightly slower than 1.50 - for example, waking the PSP from sleep mode
    3) PRX loading off the memstick seems to be somewhat a bit more buggy than 1.50's - sometimes when you exit a homebrew, the PRXs won't load...

Apart from those - 2.71 SE is better than 1.50

Yup - but you can't use the 2.71 downgrader - you use the recovery flasher.
