just read a topic about someoe who questioned about this. Yes, they will send it back with a higher firmware. Does anybody know a way to possibly avoid this? I think i may have just found an idea of how:

    1. Upgrade your PSP to 3.02 OE-A (not B, it has other features)
    2. Use Iguanahak's tutorial to change your system version number to 3.03
    3. format ms and put videos, photos, and music on it
    4. To be safe, put a 3.03 Update on your ms so it looks like u just updated
    5. send it in with the ms inside the PSP so you look like an innocent PSP user. and pray...

Anyone else have any ideas? I too might be sending my psp in cuz the UMD drive open button broke.

They'l probably just format it anyway as a standard procedure after fixing it. May I suggest putting a note in when you are sending it off saying:
PLEASE DO NOT FUCK WITH MY SETTINGS. THANKYOU

also when I called sony to send mine in they said
depending on your psp's condition sony will either fix it right away
or swap it with a previously refurbished psp
they said they dont upgrade but you might get a diffrent
    firmware in the swap
I dont know if thats true though

I really would not try a TA-82 yet....Because it patches some keys and even if you do this I think there program that they hook it up to would go off because CRC32 check would not be right.
