--Your games will run smoother because custom firmwares unlock the PSP processor. Its locked to 222 or 266 mhz and Custom Firmwares set the processor to 333. There is a noticeable difference.

--the screen can be brighter when running only off the battery

--You can use custom plugins like ones that allow you to listen to your own music anywhere anytime in games, take screenshots, redirect your PSP screen to your computer monitor, and a bunch more

--customization. Tons of themes that blow sony's shit out of the water

--homebrew games made by your average Joe programmer.

--homebrew applications (look it up, there's tons of useful apps)

--emulators like SNES, NES, N64, Gameboy, Sega Genesis, atari (just to name a few)

--ISO/backup games can be played from your memory stick so you can forget about ever using UMDs. ISOs load faster and can extend your battery life by not spinning a disk in the psp.

--ummm...probably more, but those are the main benefits^

The processor speed isn't really true anymore. sony allowed for it to be 333 mhz in current games.
