Default Cost of download games versus UMD

So I got me PSP Go at the weekend.

It was the 1st time i really used psn and realised that the cost of downloaded games is far greater than the UMD games. Gran turismo was £17.99 UMD but the download version is £22.99??? I know i dont have a choice when it comes to the PSP Go but i'm wondering for those who own a unhackable 2000 or 3000, why would anyone buy the download version and not the UMD version?

No packaging, no media and no distrubution channels to have to worry about, why would downloaded games from PSN be more expensive than UMDs?

That's damn weird . I guess the PSN games are supposed to be cheaper than UMDS since the cost used in making PSN games is less than UMDS cost ( PSN only required software while UMDS software + hardware ) .

It's basically because you can get the game at an inflated price but as long as you are sign into your account, you can redistro it to 4 (?) other PSPs as long as your account is activated on it. You can also download it as many times as needed.

On top of that, you're paying for a service that needs extensive maintenance. I'm sure that they don't have a server dedicated just for the PSP's PSN.

ooh . I didn't know that ( since I never used PSN actually ). That means that PSN games deserve to be more expensive .
And I found out two more reasons . PSN games don't get corrupted like UMDS ( stop reading I mean ) and also they're damn faster (playing from memory stick is much faster than from umds)

The reason why it can cost more is due to how Sony charges for digital downloads. I'm not totally up to date on this but up to a year ago they would charge publishers/devs a fee per download (this is why there used to be such little content on PSN). I'm not sure how that's changed.
But there's also maintenance cost and running fee's. Once any physical media game is completed and shipped - no more costs are incurred. But with digital downloads even a game that is not selling will cost the publisher or dev money.

Stores can also compete by selling more expensive products. A store may take a hit on portable games but keep console games prices high, or vice versa. There's also a massive discount from buying in bulk. Which all help stores be cheaper than DD services (except Steam, no way in hell will I be able to preorder L4D2 and get it on the day for £25 in a store!).

IMO ... The real reason is that if you own a PSP Go then you cannot get games from anywhere else so they can charge whatever they like per game. If you have no competition you can set your price as high as you like.

The Australian PSN store charges retail price for digital games. That is of course if you're lucky enough to find a game to buy.
