This will get you to 5.50 GEN-D3. If you have problems with that firmware, you can download the 5.00 eboot and use the same program to downgrade to 5.00 M33.
- Download Hellcat's Recovery Flasher v1.60 (2.3 MiB)
- Download 5.50-GEN-D3 FW Pack for Recovery Flasher 1.60 (252.2 KiB)
- You also need the 5.50 Official Update eboot.
- If you can't open .rar files then you'll need to download 7zip (or something else that can unRAR files).
- Connect your PSP to your computer, either with a USB cable or via card reader.
- Open rflash160.rar with 7zip and then extract the RECOVERY folder to your PSP/GAME/ folder.
- Open RF-FW-Pack_550-GEN-D3_v110.rar and extract PSP1000_550-GEN-D3.rfp to the root of your PSP. That's not MP_ROOT, it's just the root - the place on your memory stick where you have the folders such as PSP and PICTURE and stuff like that. The first folder... usually that's like I:\ or H:\ on a PC.
- Extract the 5.50 Official Update eboot to the root of your memory stick also. Rename it to 550.pbp (it should be EBOOT.PBP before you rename it).
Now close all the windows pertaining to the PSP and disconnect the PSP from the computer. On the PSP go over to game and launch the Recovery Flasher. On the first option, where you can select the (C)FW version to be installed, press "X" until it reads "load from external FW pack". Select "Install CFW selected above". From the now shown list, choose the Firmware Pack that you want to install and let Recovery Flasher do it's work.

and then the instal just hangs ( stops responding)

the pack seems buggy

The pack is rather old. You're probably better off searching for updated homebrew anyway.
