    Default Ripping, Converting, Naming, and Playing PSX Games on PSP [TUTORIAL]

    I made this because... it seems no matter how many help threads out there, someone will still always make a new thread... :sigh: :lol:

    OVERVIEW: Based off of my knowledge of how this works.
    =================================

    Wanna play psx games on PSP without having to have a PS3 and buy it online? Well there are a few things you must know.

    Psx games are on disc. They contain the data needed to play the game. PSP games are on disc as well, but homebrew can be run through the memory card instead of a disc as well.

    If you are a complete newb to this information, you may have heard of the terms ISO, DAX, CSO, JSO, EBOOT, and PBP floating around. These are all image formats; not picture formats, but rather a digital copy of something. ISO is the default image for most disc based games; such as the psx and PSP. Dax, CSO, and JSO are some of the many types of converted ISO formats that offer different variations of compression. Compression is your friend here, because most psx games would take up usually between 400-700mb uncompressed. Thats can be nearly a whole memory stick right there. EBOOT.PBP is the PSP's launching format, used to launch games, homebrew, ect. What we basically need to do here, is convert the digital psx image [usually .iso] to an EBOOT.pbp file for the PSP to read and begin playing the psx game. This thankfully compressed the ISO usually a great deal, and is pretty easy to add/remove to/from your psp.

    =================================
    1: Download 2 of these 3 programs [you need the Autopopstation if you are going to rip your ps1 isos off of a ps1 cd. The other 2 programs do the same thing, but i just thought i'd give you a backup plan..

    =-=-=-=-============--=-=-=-=-=-=
    1a: If you want to rip isos off of a disc..

    B) Insert your PS1 cd and Unzip Autopopstation. Then go into the CoreData Folder. From here boot up the ISOProducer.exe.

    Go to Configure Plugin... now make sure the following are in place:

    Interface: W2K/XP -IOCTL scsi commands
    Drive: [The letter of the drive your ps1 cd is in]
    Read Mode: BE_2 (ATAPI SPEC 2)
    Subchannel read: Read Subchannels (slow, few drives support it, best chances with BE mode)

    [You can adjust the rip speed as you feel. I prefer 16X because its hella fast, but sometimes [rarely] errors occur.

    B) Now click reload CD. Wait a few seconds, then click Make Iso... name your iso and select the folder you want to save to. The process

    should begin shortly.

    =-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    2: Converting the ISO

    In order for psp to play psx games, it must convert .bin, .iso, .img, .mdf ect... files to eboot.pbp. So this is what you do...

    ==-=-=-=-=-=-USING POPSTATIONGUI=-=-=-=-=-=
    2a: If not already extracted, extract the folder. then run the PopstationGUI.exe.

    a) Where it says PSX Image Filer, go to browse. Then select your .iso, .bin [whatever the file is]. Now go to the output folder and set that. Set your compression level... i highly, highly suggest a level 9 because psx isos take up a lot of space, even when compressed. You can choose to give it a game title, or customize the eboot pics and such.

    Then go to "GO" at the bottom of the program. It will convert.

    FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR EBOOT USING POPSTATIONGUI, GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS TUTORIAL.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=USING ICETEA=-=-=-=-=-=-
    2b: Extract the folder if not already and run the icetea.exe.

    a) Where it says PSX Image, go to Select and find your file. Then choose your compression level. Under game ID... you must have a game ID. You can make it up tho... just pick a unique PSX [anything] and just jot a random number. Under game title, add the title to your game, then choose the output directory. Now hit lets go.

    [NOTE: ICE TEA will by default have the open file type as .img. Be sure to change it to .iso or .bin seen fit.]

    FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR EBOOT USING ICETEA GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS TUTORIAL.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-Putting on PSP=-=-=-==--=-=
    3: Put your EBOOT.PBP in a folder [ I recommend naming the folder the same as the game]. Drag the folder to your PSP/GAME via USB chord. (Note: PopstationGUI should ask you if you want to do this automatically, PopstationGUI also puts the EBOOT in a Folder)

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Playing on PSP=-=-=-=-==-=
    Exit USB mode. Go to Game then to Memory Stick from your XMB. Find your game [should be first on the list] and load it...

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Saving on PSP=-=-=-=-==-=
    Psx games on PSP save just like they would on the psx. Therefore, you must use the same method the game would use for psx. For example, in FFVII for psx, you must stop at random save points placed throughout the game. Well, its the same case for psp. All Game will go in the SAVEDATA folder.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Deleting from PSP=-=-=-=-==-=
    Just do one of the following:

    1) Go to the Game>>Memory Stick from your PSP XMB. Find the file with the game name and data, and simply delete.
    2) Plug your PSP to your computer via USB cable. Go to X:/PSP/GAME [X = Whatever your PSP drive is]. Find the folder with your psx game in it, right click, delete.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= PSX Emulator Interface=-=-=-=-==-=
    Want to adjust some things while playing your PSX game? Well here are some options... using the Home button...

    1a= I want to change my screen size, this looks wayy to small to me... can i get it double size? Full screen?
    1b= Yes, you can... Press the HOME button on your PSP and go to Screen Mode, and press up/down to adjust between Small, Normal, and Fullscreen.

    2a=These button configs are hard for this game. Especially since the primary buttons are R2 and L2... can i change them?
    2b= Yes you can...Press HOME and go to Assign Buttons. Press up/down to adjust between the different type of preset configurations. Hopefull sony will make this more User Configuratory instead of their own sets.

    3a=I have a manual that is attached to my psx eboot. Can i read it?
    3b= Yes you can...Press HOME and go to Software Manual....

    4a= How do i get out of this thing? Im done for right now
    4b= Press the HOME button and go to Quit Game...

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Customizing your EBOOT=-=-=-=-==-=
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-= Using POPSTATIONGUI=-=-=-=-==-=

    After selecting your Psx image file, the output folder, Compression level, ect for your EBOOT, go to Customize The Eboot button at the bottom left. Now you can choose your loading pics, animations, songs, and icons. ICON0 is your default icon for your game. PIC0 is your transparent of text image. PIC1 is your background image for the game. ICON1 is your animations. SND0 is your ATRAC3 sound file that will be played when the game is selected. The Gameboot pic is the picture that displays right after booting the game.

    The usual dimensions are as following:

    ICON0 is usually a .png around 144x80.
    PIC0 is usually 480x272 and is usually a .png. It is mostly used for text and is transparent
    PIC1 is usually 480x272 and is usually a .png also
    GAMEBOOT or WARNING is usually 480x272 and is usually a .png also
    SND0 is usually less than 60 seconds long, and is a .at3. Search google to find out how to convert. Use Goldwave and find the ATRACT3 Codec.
    ICON1 is usually a small animation. .PMF format.

    Next go to the Preview EBOOT button. Make sure your Pic looks how it should.

    Go to the GO Button to finish.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-= Using ICETEA=-=-=-=-==-=

    After selecting your Psx image file, the output folder, Compression level, ect for your EBOOT, go to the Expert tab at the top left of the program.

    ICON1 is usually a small animation. .PMF format.

    Now just click "Lets Go" at the bottom of the program.

    [hope this gets stickied... it will be my first sticky ever and encourage me to make even more meaningfull tutorials from my experience and finds]
