Default [GUIDE] 3.49 (and below) official firmware > 5.00 M33-4 custom FW plus emulator help

hello everyone. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to hacking the PSP and all, but I FINALLY managed to get 5.00 M33-4 CFW on mine, and a friends PSP. the purpose of this thread is going to basically be the thread that I needed when I upgraded mine and my friends PSP from stock to 5.00 M33-4 and put all the emulators on my PSP.

I am VERY detailed with instructions, and there shouldn't be any problems if you follow all these steps exactly. this is a noob safe guide to gaming with 5.00 M33-4 on your fat PSP. I include links to the pages, files, and videos needed to get from whatever firmware you are running that is below the official 3.50 firmware, to 5.00 M33-4 custom firmware for the fat PSP's. if there are any problems, make a post, and I and the good people here will be glad to assist you.

I also include a section on emulators.

DISCLAIMER: like it says in the links, there IS a possibility (not very likely if you follow all the steps correctly, though) of your PSP bricking (that means killing it), so if anything happens to your PSP and it ends up bricked, I am NOT responsible in any way, shape, or form. now, if you agree to this disclaimer, continue with the guide.

just for clarification, I started out with 2.82 firmware on my PSP, I have a fat PSP, and it has the TA-082 motherboard. my friends PSP was the exact same. but, from what I understand, the way I will show you, it doesn't matter what motherboard you have.

to get to 5.00 M33-4, you WILL need an American or European copy of Lumines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumines) for the PSP (sorry, no japanese copies), and a USB cable to connect your PSP to the computer.

if you want to acquire a copy of Lumines without actually buying a new game that you're never going to play, you can do what I did:
    1) go to gamestop or some other game store
    2) find a used copy of Lumines in said game store
    3) ask about their return policy on game that you just didn't want
    4) pay for the copy of the game
    5) leave, go home, complete these steps
    6) return the game after you are done with these steps
    7) get money back and enjoy your new custom firmware without having to buy a game you may not really want!

more warnings/suggestions: KEEP YOUR PSP PLUGGED INTO THE CHARGER AT ALL TIMES DURING A FIRMWARE UPGRADE

    Getting 5.00 M33-4 CFW
so, to get from whatever firmware you have, as long as it's below 3.50 OFW (official firmware), to 5.00 M33-4 CFW (custom firmware), these are the steps needed in order for it to happen:
    1) update to 3.50 OFW and then downgrade to 1.50 OFW with use of Lumines:
    http://www.psphacking101.com/node/33 (video)

    2) update to 3.52 M33
    http://www.psphacking101.com/node/34 (video)
    or
    http://toosmartguys.com/forum/viewto...=10454&start=0 (thread)

    3) update to 3.52 M33-4
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=1231 <-- upgrade files
[1] open the file in winRar or whatever program you have
[2] connect your PSP to the computer and select "USB connection" under the "settings" tab.
[3] drop the folder named "PSP" in the file directly into the root folder, a permission window will come up and click "yes to all"
[4] reboot the PSP in recovery mode - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7COfN_KJ_eU <-- video
[5] after you get into the recovery menu, go to configuration, and go down to where it says "game folder homebrew" if beside it, it says "(currently: 1.50 Kernel)", click X to make it not say be on the 1.50 Kernel. during the different upgrades, it will say different things, so just make sure it does not say "(currently: 1.50 Kernel)
[6] scroll up and click "Back" to get to the main menu, then click "Exit" at the main recovery menu to get into the PSP
[7] turning our attention back to the 3.52 M33-4 files that you put on your PSP from earlier, boot up your PSP, and click over to "game" and then to "memory stick". in there, you will see a picture of a logo that reads "3:33:33" in red. run that program, approve everything and there you go, you now have 3.52 M33-4. now you can delete that program off your PSP.

    4) update to 5.00 M33-4
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=1616
[1] save and open the RAR file from above link, and extract the entire folder named "UPDATE" to somewhere easily accessible on your computer (desktop, wherever, doesn't really matter...just personal preference)
[2] download the 5.00 OFW update (get it here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=1568)
[3] extract the "EBOOT.PBP" file to your desktop. right click it, click "rename" and enter "500" as it's new name
[4] open the "UPDATE" folder from step 1 and drag and drop the newly rename "500" file into the folder next to "EBOOT"
[5] once again, connect your PSP to the computer and select "USB connection" under the "settings" tab.
[6] in the PSP folder, click these folders: PSP>GAME. drop the "UPDATE" folder directly into this folder
[7] like above, go over to "game" and then to "memory stick". in there, you will see a picture of a logo that reads "M33-4" and has text next to it that should read "PSP Update ver 5.00".
[8] run that file, accept all the notices, approve everything and now you have 5.00 M33-4 Custom Firmware! one last step before you're good!

    5) install and run the 1.50 Kernel Add-on for 5.00 M33
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1572 <-- kernel update for 5.00 M33
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/4 <-- OFW 1.50 EBOOT
[1] downloaded the 1.50 addon, and the 1.50 EBOOT
[2] connect your PSP to the computer and select "USB connection" under the "settings" tab.
[3] go into "X:/PSP/GAME" and create a folder named "5.XX"
[4] open the 1.50 addon RAR file, and go into the "150k_addon500" folder, from there, go into the folder named "150k_installer".
[5] drag and drop the four files inside the "150k_installer" folder in the "X:\PSP\GAME\5.XX" folder.
[6] open the "EBOOT_1.50" RAR file, and drag the file named "EBOOT.PBP" to the desktop and rename it "150"
[7] open the root folder of your PSP and drag and drop the "150" file from my desktop to the PSP root folder
[8] start your PSP, and once again go over to "game" and then to "memory stick". in there, you will see a picture of a logo that reads "1.5" in red with two opposing arrows and has text next to it that should read "1.50 Kernel Addon for 5.00".
[9] run it, click X for everything, and it should autoexit after a LONG list of OK's. and that's it! your PSP now has a completely up to date CFW 5.00 M33-4!!!

oh, and to play the emulators I cover next, you need to do this:
    1) boot up in the recovery menu
    2) click on "Configuration"
    3) go to the line "Game folder homebrew (currently: 5.XX Kernel)" and change it to "Game folder homebrew (currently: 1.50 Kernel)"
if it already says "1.50 Kernel", then you obviously don't need to change anything.

if you try to run an emulator on the "5.XX Kernel" setting, you will get an error message that reads "The game could not be started (8002014C)".

How to install NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis Emulators for your PSP
the reason I added this in here is like above, I wish this was part of the imaginary thread I needed when updating my firmware cause the reason I wanted to get CFW on my PSP was emulators. I will just cover NES, SNES and Sega Megadrive/Genesis/Sega CD/Mega CD emulators that I KNOW will work for 5.00 M33-4, but I will also include a link that is a "super thread" for other emulators for the PSP.

DISCLAIMER: I can't help you with where to get ROMS for this cause it's illegal. google is your friend.

    Installing the the NES emulator:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/47207263...davex.zip.html <-- NesterJ 1.11 RM
    http://rapidshare.com/files/48590775...fix01.zip.html <-- bug fix
[1] download and open the files above
[2] connect your PSP to the computer and select "USB connection" under the "settings" tab. (if you have 5.00 M33-4, all you have to do is connect the USB cable to your PSP, and it should connect itself automatically)
    [3] open the file "NesterJ_v1_11_RM_by_davex"
[4] go to the folder "X:\PSP\GAME", and drag and drop the entire "NESTERJ_1_11_RM" folder in here.
[5] open the file "NesterJ_v1_11_RM_by_davex _bugfix01" and within that RAR file, you should see another file named "EBOOT.PBP". drop that into the folder named "NESTERJ_1_11_RM". it will ask you if you want to replace that file with another file named "EBOOT.PBP". click "yes".
[7] create a folder named "ROMS" inside the "X:\PSP\GAME\NESTERJ_1_11_RM" folder if one doesn't already exist. put your ROMS there.
[8] enjoy your new NES emulator! it has a neat feature that the right trigger is a "rewind button". so if you make a mistake in the game, you just hit the right trigger, and it will rewind back as far as you need to go.

    Installing the the SNES emulator:
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=488 <-- snes9xTYL-0.4.2
[1] download and open the file above
[2] connect your PSP to the computer and select "USB connection" under the "settings" tab. (if you have 5.00 M33-4, all you have to do is connect the USB cable to your PSP, and it should connect itself automatically)
[3] open the file named "snes9xTYL-0.4.2"
[4] open the folder inside named "snes9xTYL-0.4.2"
[5] click on the folder inside there named "1.5"
[6] go in your PSP folder and go into the folder "X:\PSP\GAME"
[7] drag and drop the both "snes9xTYL" and "snes9xTYL%" in here.
[8] create a folder named "ROMS" inside the "X:\PSP\GAME\snes9xTYL" folder if one doesn't already exist. put your ROMS there.
[9] enjoy your SNES games on your PSP!

Installing the the Sega Genesis emulator:
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=1353 <-- PicoDrive 1.51
[1] download and open the file above
[2] connect your PSP to the computer and select "USB connection" under the "settings" tab. (if you have 5.00 M33-4, all you have to do is connect the USB cable to your PSP, and it should connect itself automatically)
[3] open the file named "PicoDrive_psp_151"
[4] go to the folder "X:\PSP\GAME", and drag and drop the entire "PicoDrive" folder in here
[5] create a folder named "ROMS" inside the "X:\PSP\GAME\PicoDrive" folder if one doesn't already exist. put your ROMS there.
[6] enjoy your new Sega Megadrive/Genesis/Sega CD/Mega CD emulator! 8)

    accessing your emulators:
to play your newly installed emulators, boot up your PSP, and click over to "game" and then to "memory stick". choose your emulator of choice, and have fun!
    NesterJ: NES emulator
    snes9xTYL-0.4.2: SNES emulator
