Default The New To PSP Hacking Thread

This is a written tutorial for those who have no knowledge what-so-ever about Hacking the PSP. The thread will be divided into 9 sections; Intro, PSPs, Official Firmware & Custom Firmware, Soft-Modding and Hard-Modding, Brick, Semi-Brick and Unbricking, Memory Sticks, ISO/CSOs, Homebrew Games and Apps and a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section. Let's Begin:

    Introduction

So you have a PSP. And you heard and maybe even saw people download and play free games, having different kind of applications, custom themes and what-not. And I guess your thinking that thats cool and you want to do those things. Yes you can but it depends. Hacking your PSP enables you to do those things listed but also has some disadvantages. People that has hacked their PSP most of the time encounter problems, but by reading this Guide Fully and understanding the PSP more you'll be safe from having to post 100 threads on problems that you encounter

    PSP

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) has 4 Model Types:

    PSP 1000 - Hackable
    PSP 2000 - Hackable
    PSP 3000 - Hackable
    PSP Go - Unhackable

    Firmware

Firmware is the software type that is loaded on the PSP (like Windows XP).

Official Firmware is the Firmware that comes pre-loaded with a PSP. With Official Firmware you will NOT be able to Download and Play Hacked Games on your PSP, load Applications on your PSP and play Homebrew Games.

Custom Firmware is a moddified/hacked type of Sony's Official Firmware. With this hack you CAN download and play full games on your PSP, load applications on your PSP and play Homebrew Games.

The Lastest Official Firmware Version is: 6.20 and there is currently NO way of downgrading a PSP with a v3 Motherboard with that firmware version.

The Lastest Custom Firmware Version is: 5.50 Gen D3 which decrypts newer games for the PSP.

To check to see what version your on Go to System>System Settings>System Information. This should display your current Firmware Version.

    Soft-Modding and Hard-Modding

Soft-Modding is a type of modding that does not require any hardware devices. You will need a computer and a PSP to soft-mod it. Later versions of the PSP 2000s and all versions of the PSP 3000 require soft-modding to enable the usage of ISOs and Homebrew. ChickHEN is one method that one can soft-mod their PSP.

Hard-Modding is a type of modding that does require the usage of hardware devices. Hard-Modding is reffered to as the "Best Way" to hack a PSP and only ALL 1000 Models and Earlier 2000 Models of the PSP can be Hard-Modded. Hard-Modding requires a special device called a Pandora Battery. A Pandora Battery is a hard-modded PSP Battery which is one of the two tools needed install Custom Firmware on a PSP. The Magic Memory Stick is a some-what modded Memory Stick with files including CFW version supports the Pandora Battery (PB) for the installation of Custom Firmware (the Magic Memory Stick (MMS) once formatted is a regular Memory Stick again).

    Brick, Semi-Brick and Unbricking

Brick is the state of the PSP which the XMB cannot be accessed is considered utterly useless. This occurs when there was a fail attempt of either Downgrading the PSP or a fail Installation of Custom Firmware. When this happens the PSP displays nothing and the screen stays black. Only the LED power turns on.

Semi-Brick is the same thing as a Bricked PSP but one can access the Recovery Menu which can help them Unbrick the PSP. One can use Hellcat's Recovery Flasher to unbricked their semi-bricked PSP.

To Unbrick a PSP one MUST have a Pandora Battery and MMS. This installs a clean version of 3.90m33, 4.01m33, 5.00m33 etc. The Pandora Battery will only work on 1000s and some 2000s. If you are bricked with a PSP with a v3 motherboard you are screwed.

    Memory Sticks

The Memory Stick is used to save files and load them on the PSP. Memory Stick that are causing problems might be fake.

How to check if my Memory Stick is Real?

Go to Photo on your XMB, Click Triangle on Memory Stick in Photo and click Information. It should say MagicGate: Supported/Unsupported/Unkown.

    MagicGate Supported = Real/Legitamite.
    MagicGate Unsupported = Fake.
    MagicGate Unknown = Fake.

    ISO/CSOs

ISOs are image files of games which you can play on your PSP. Most ISOs are the complete RIP of a game.

CSOs are compressed image files so they take up less space. Some problems with compressing an ISO are Audio problems, scene errors etc.

ISOs can only be played on PSPs which has Custom Firmware. These ISOs/CSOs can be downloaded from Torrent sites and other websites. Please DO NOT ask where to download them.

    Homebrew Games and Applications

Homebrew Games are modified/edited games create by the designers. Emulators are considered Homebrew Games. There are N64 Emulators, GBA Emulators NES Emulators etc.

Homebrew Application are applications that are loaded on the PSP (like the IPhone/Touch) There are many useful applicationsand some just for amusement. Please check in the Homebrew Section.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question: How to hack my PSP?
    Answer: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/f133...hread-t227349/

    Question: My PSP is bricked?

Question: My PSP is version 6.20 can it be hacked?

Yes, homebrew is created by designers... I think a more appropriate explanation is that hombrew games and apps are created by programmers using C++. These programmers do not work for Sony.

I just wanted to clear that up in case someone thinks that homebrew apps are modified Sony applications. I can't think of any situation where we use a homebrew app that first started as an official Sony app. (Well the Pandora battery I guess.. but that's hardware)
