I received an Xbox 360 Elite as a promotional offer when purchasing a TV
recently. I'm retired now and have little use for a game machine except for
young visiting relatives. However, I would like to use the machine as a PVR
with a USB HD tuner, and being familiar with Linux, wondered if this was
possible while still retaining the machine's original OS for use for games?
I have Googled around and it seems that only very specific machines/optical
drives and kernel versions can support Linux (Is this the case?). But I
don't know how to establish if mine can.

Is there some mod that can achieve what I am seeking?

On the console label it says built in China, Manufacture date: 2009-09-13,
    Prod ID: 02116132002206493807.
When checking version info on-screen I got info I didn't understand:
    D:2.0.7363.0-K:2.0.7363.0 (BK:2.0.1888.0)(E:1) X:D6DF-2C87-F681-A3IF

If it is possible, where should I start?

If those are your Current Kernel and Dash versions, yes, you can fully exploit the box. See the FRONT PAGE (HOME link) here for all the FreeBoot stuff. Or, how about GOOGLE or YAHOO searches, it's all already answered for you, you only need to look.

of course, if you have already been on live and done the updates, you may be past the point where it becomes not possible.

No, I haven't been on Xbox Live. Its not likely that I ever will (I think). But I suspected that the date of manufacture may have meant that it was delivered with all those updates installed as new and would likely cause problems for installing/running (say) a Linux installation.

Yeah, is kind of strange the MFR date was just around the Summer09 update, and has a pre 8XXX Kernel and Dash.
