xbox 360 - setting up for mp4

hi, im a total newbie, i don't even own an xbox myself but i have one available to me and i need some help
the xbox might be modded, other than that it hasn't been used almost at all
also there's no internet connection or network available for the xbox

what i want is some guidelines, where to start looking for solutions in order to play mp4 video files if that's possible, through the xbox and via usb
the message i get is something like 'unplayable content - a media update is required to play this content'

They must meet the CODEC requirements to play.

You cannot download the CODEC if you cannot get to live.

If the console is BANNED, you cannot download the CODEC.

do i need anything specific for live, eg money / unit identification codes?
do i need a pc?
is there anything i should avoid? i mean my memory tells me that the unit is modded in some way, could it become locked bcz/banned of that? how to avoid that?

You need a SUBSCRIPTION to live, -via- credit card stored in the console; or go buy a 1,3, 12 month card, and input the CODE on the back of it.

You said the Xbox MIGHT be modded, well, if it is, you will WASTE anything more than a MONTH payment.

You have to be SURE you know what firmware the drive has if it IS modded. Anything other than LT will get you banned, thus you lose your live account.
